The 15th June 2010 saw the official opening of the new Bridge that Michael Eavis had commissioned in honour of Arabella Churchill. As some of you may know Arabella was the Grand daughter of Winston Churchill who shunned what some might consider the 'high life' in favour of a more 'spiritual' existence here in the West country. Around 100 people attended the ceremony that began shortly after 1.00pm. Andrew Kerr (also 'founding member' of the Festival) spoke of Arabellas huge involvement in the creation, structuring and development of the theatrical element of the Festival and how, in later life she found great solace in Buddhism. The ribbon was cut by Jack Churchill, Bellas Nephew, who together with Michael and Andrew spoke of her spectacular achievements within the organisation of the festival since its creation in the 70's. It seems fitting that a Bridge should now stand as a lasting monument to Bella. After all, what does a bridge do ? Its purpose is to join, to bring together and to provide a means by which different sides can cross over and appreciate a different perspective. That's what Bella was about and isn't that what the Festival is all about as well? Bellas Bridge can be found leading from the Circus Arena and Theatre Field. |
