These Awards were made by the Community Council for Somerset who are also responsible for the annual judging of the Best Village in Somerset. The Community Council for Somerset's mission statement reads: "To counter the threats to rural communities and enhance rural life throughout Somerset by equipping and supporting them to effect positive change using their inherent resources, abilities and commitment" The Website awards were sponsored and presented by Mr Martin Howe of ‘IT Know Howe’ a computer company based in Taunton. Mr Howe said: “The villagers are obviously proud of what they do and what they achieve and so they should be” The overall aim of pilton.com has always been to provide a platform from which the people of Pilton can launch ideas, promote personal and business interests, advertise events and clubs or simply to share and gain information. Pilton.com is ultimately no more than a means of communication no different to a television, a telephone or an artists canvas. It is the programme that is watched, the words that are said and the picture that is painted that is judged and not the means by which they were delivered.
The rate at which the popularity of this website has grown since its launch in July has been incredible. The enthusiasm that has been shown towards it by everyone in the village has been quite overwhelming and these awards have only been made possible as a result of that support and the input that has been supplied. Not only is pilton.com now regularly viewed as far afield as Canada, the United States, New Zealand, Finland, Australia, South Africa and China, but it now receives thousands of visits per month and has even been able to reunite families from far away countries with their roots back here in Somerset. Pilton.com has not created a community it has simply provided a means through which the community can be seen. Something in which everyone in the village can join together as one , regardless of age, political persuasion or television screen size, to publicly rejoice in its united achievements and to celebrate the fact that community life is indeed very much alive and well, and living right here in Pilton. This is a tremendous achievement of which everyone in Pilton should be proud.
