APRIL 2010 PILTON PARISH COUNCIL REPORT At the March meeting of the Parish Council there was discussion under 'Matters arising' regarding a suggestion made to the Council that the possibility of re-siting the War Memorial be considered. When the suggestion was made to the Council we considered it was of primary importance to carry out consultation with parishioners and we thank everyone who has contacted us to date. Further comments are of course welcome. We feel it is useful to outline the concerns that gave rise to the original suggestion: 1) Due to increased traffic there is concern about the safe access of visitors to the War Memorial at times other than Remembrance Sunday - on that occasion there are few safety problems as the traffic has been stopped. 2) There is concern about the safety of maintenance workers at the Memorial. 3) The constant pounding by heavy vehicles on the A361 is also increasing the likelihood of damage and consequent escalation of future maintenance costs. There is a need to improve the access and erect a safety railing. 4) The situation of the War Memorial in its present location makes it unlikely that visits for quiet reflection can be made. We regret any distress this suggestion may have caused and must emphasise that it is only a suggestion not a proposal and that every option will be fully considered and discussed in due course.
