       The ASBO Team

John Pratt, Peter Tobia, Pam Oliver, Godfrey Gingell

Some Piltonians may have noticed that over the past several months the sides of the road near the church has become wider and at the same time slightly tidier.

For some years the verges on roads around the church and over the bridge towards Cumhill have cultivated tall grasses, huge nettles and some rather long straggly brambles.  This is apart from the dandelions and grass and a whole festation of weeds. Often , after a downpour the drains into the stream were blocked creating puddles which helped the wildlife grow even better.  Such has been the growth that at times the width of the road has been narrowed by up to 5 feet.  Such a situation was making walking a hazard, pushing a wheelchair or similar a nightmare and driving somewhat nerve racking especially when meeting a vehicle coming the other way.

Two people decided to do something about this and so started doing an hour’s work each week to clear the roadside by hand, using shovels, shears and one wheelbarrow.  The spoils have been dumped on ground belonging to Michael Eavis to whom we are most grateful, but it was a slow process.  Around two months ago we were joined by two volunteers, Peter and Pam and the work now continues at a more reasonable pace.  We have been promised the use of a digger and driver in the very near future which hopefully will speed up our work load dramatically.  We have named ourselves the ASBO Team ( Ageing Suave Broompushing Operatives ) and no we are not serving an ASBO, although the name was derived after the village postie (Graham) suggested that this was our motivation! We are having to retrace some of our earlier work as cut off roots are sprouting and so a systemic weed killer has been applied to reduce the further growth.  There is still much to do just in this corner of the village.

Despite the various comments we take satisfaction in attempting to tidy what we believe is a village worth working for.  If you agree and would like to help please get in touch with John Pratt on 899167 or Godfrey Gingell on 899136.
