If you pass by the village hall on a Monday, and hear something interesting going on inside, it will be the storytelling of the Unlimited Company, who are proud to be the first people to hire the refurbished building on a regular basis. Brian Marshall, the co-director, says - ‘We are a company of storytellers with learning disabilities. We believe that stories have the power to change our lives. We tell stories at schools, residential homes, conferences, and to help with staff training. There are nine in the company, supported by three staff and several volunteers.’ The company live across the Mendip region and travel to Pilton every Monday to meet in the village hall. With the help of funding from the Big Lottery and Arts Council South West speech and language therapist Dr Nicola Grove developed the project to offer adults with learning difficulties the chance to explore the world of story telling. Everyone has a story to tell about themselves, and everyone enjoys stories – but many people lack the support, the confidence and the communication skills to share anecdotes with each other. Working in partnership with the British Institute of Learning Difficulties, and the Community Team for Adults with Learning Disabilities in Mendip, the project provides accredited training in community storytelling. Participants who complete the course are forming a company of storytellers who will work with the community across Somerset. Jane Harwood. We enjoy meeting in the village hall because ‘We enjoy using the kitchen – it’s good for making tea and coffee’ ‘It’s cosy here’ ‘It’s a good room’ ‘The trustees explain about the history of the building’ ‘It’s got a lift – you can go upstairs or downstairs’ ‘I like the surrounding country, and the church’ ‘Good access for people in wheelchairs’ ‘It’s nice and big – lots of room’ ‘Good parking for the our bus with level access’ ‘A good view of the church – I like the historical architecture’ ‘The stone walls we can see from the window’ ‘It’s closer to home – good for our drivers’ ‘The village people are really friendly’ So we’d like to say ‘thank you’ to all the people at the village hall for making us feel at home.
